Exciting second-half goal highlighted Berkmar's 2-0 win over Collins Hill in the Class AAAAAA championship game.
It's easy to understand Berkmar High School soccer player Awey Houry's excitement over his second-half goal in the Class AAAAAA soccer championship game. The senior broke away from defenders to secure Berkmar's 2-0 win over Collins Hill, the Patriots' first soccer title in school history. After the goal, Houry did a back flip before his teammates swarmed his with congratulations. Lilburn's Panthers finished just ahead of runner-up Chattahoochee High School.
Parkview High School's boys swim and dive team are state champions again -- for the second consecutive year. The Panthers finished with 234 points, edging ahead of Chattahoochee High School by justeight points. Chattahoochee High scored 226; Lassiter High placed third with 211 points, according to Gwinnett Daily Post. If you missed seeing Parkview High School boys swim and dive team win the state championship last weekend, or just want to see it again, a video is now available on the Georgia High School Association network's website. Ricky Lehner finished first in the 100 meter breaststroke, followed by Geoffrey Carter and Nathan Jones, also from Parkview. The 200 freestyle relay team (Peter Meadows, Ricky Lehner, Rory Martin and Christopher Rogers) also came in first. Parkview girls swim and dive team also led in the 200 freestyle relay, and the team finished an admirable third overall in the championship, behind Brookwood and Lassiter. Panthers beat Colquitt County 8-2 in the deciding third game of the Class AAAAA baseball semifinals.
With their backs to the wall, the Parkview Panthers came out swinging Tuesday afternoon in Colquitt County. A day after rallying for seven runs late in an 8-4 win over Colquitt in Game 2 of the best-of-three Class AAAAA series, the Panthers scored all of the runs they needed in the first inning to beat the Packers 8-2 in Game 3, sending them to the state finals. The Panthers (27-9) scored six runs in the top of the first inning, then held Colquitt (22-14) to just four hits. “We didn’t play real well in the first 10 innings of this series," said Parkview coach Chan Brown after the team arrived back at the school around 8:15 p.m. and was greeted by a large group of cheering fans. Providence scores first, but can't hold off Walker in 3-1 loss.
Providence Christian’s quest for its first boys state championship in school history fell short Saturday night in the Class A soccer final in Marietta. After scoring in the game’s first three minutes, the Stars couldn’t hold off Walker’s ability to make the most out of loose balls in a 3-1 loss to the Wolverines (13-7-1). The Stars (16-6) got off to a quick start, thanks one of Brent Hansen’s dangerous throw-ins. An effective weapon all season, Hansen heaved the ball from the right sideline to the left side of the goal, where Matt McGlamery finished with a terrific header past Walker keeper Colin Mitchell.
