Panthers beat Centennial 5-1 and 6-5 to advance in Class AAAAA baseball playoffs.
Parkview's baseball team swept visiting Centennial by scores of 5-1 and 6-5 Friday in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs. The Panthers advance to face either North Gwinnett or Etowah in the second round, beginning next Wednesday. Matt Olson took the pitching win, striking out nine, and added a two-run home run in the first game. The Panthers had to hold on after taking a 5-0 lead in the second game. Centennial, which was the home team in the second game, scored three runs and two more in the fifth, and threatened again after that. Panthers advance to state quarterfinals with 2-1 win at Wheeler.
Parkview, the fourth-seeded team from Region 8-AAAAA, is now among the eight teams remaining in the Class AAAAA boys soccer tournament. The Panthers (11-9) notched their second consecutive upset with a 2-1 win at Wheeler Wednesday in the second round, and advanced to the state quarterfinals to play Tift County this Saturday. Parkview had to come from behind to win. Goalkeeper Jack Falle had to come back, too. After making about a half-dozen saves to start the game — including a shot he had to punch over the goal in the opening minute — he came out of a corner to catch the ball but was beaten to the ball by Wheeler’s Kevin Osorio, who headed it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Wheeler lead with 10 minutes left in the half. It was a rare …

Panthers advance behind the play of defense and GK Jack Falle.
Parkview boys soccer defeated Milton by an official score of 1-0 after winning in penalties Friday in a first-round Class AAAAA playoff game that needed two nights to complete. The Panthers, the fourth-seeded team from Region 8-AAAAA, won a defensive battle over the Eagles, the No. 1 seed from Region 6-AAAAA, in an upset that gave the Gwinnett County region a first-round sweep. Berkmar, Brookwood and Dacula all advanced with Wednesday wins. Parkview'’s Jack Falle had one of the game's most important plays in the first half, and it came Wednesday night, before severe weather suspended the game with the score tied 0-0. Falle's first-half diving save in the upper right corner of the goal stopped what looked to be a sure Milton goal. Milton’s…

Ernesto Cardenas scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:31 left in the game.
Ernesto Cardenas scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:31 left in the game, as Berkmar won in its first soccer playoff game in more than 20 years, a 3-2 decision over visiting West Forsyth Wednesday night in the first round of the Class AAAAA boys tournament. Cardenas hammered home the goal after teammate Martin Lugo’s hard shot deflected off the West Forsyth goalkeeper. Lugo had brilliantly dribbled past a defender and then into the box to take the shot and Cardenas was there for the point-blank follow. Berkmar, which will play ether Walton or Milton next Wednesday at home in the second round, improved to 15-2-1. West Forsyth, the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAAAA, ended its season 6-6-2. “It’s amazing to score two goals,” …
