It’s not that we don’t love spending a summer with our kids…but, I think many moms are doing the little summer’s-over-happy-dance right now. If you need a great place to celebrate and dance, try going to a 42-year Atlanta tradition -- the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park. Crafts not your thing? Well, have no fear. There’s a little something for you and all your holiday gift exchangers at the festival, and I have the plan. Gather your area moms and find out who has the car passes (the event is free with a pass). Then, meet with a full coffee mug, a shopping bag, water bottle, sunscreen and your holiday gift exchange list. My favorite people to buy for at Yellow Daisy include teachers, neighbors, and sister-in-laws. The reason …

Not all of your escapes can be without children. If you have a few hours, try taking a mini fieldtrip with an older child. Consider going to the Education Center at Stone Mountain Park. Learning something new together not only connects you and your child, but also you to your community at-large. Located at the base of the walk-up trail, theConfederate Hall Historical and Environmental Education Center is a Fernbank-esque experience. With interactive and professional displays that show the creation of the magma rock as well as a video show inside a cave, you and your child will thoroughly enjoy learning about the creation of Stone Mountain. After you understand how the rock was formed, you can watch two short videos in a mini-theatre about…

Some park employees work, live and play at the Big Rock.
While thousands of metro Atlanta residents and tourists visit Stone Mountain Park each year, they may never have met some of the park's most important employees behind the scenes. Known as work-campers, these park employees essentially work, live and play on the campgrounds. These employees are responsible for registering new campers, booking reservations, keeping the grounds clean, and bringing new business to Stone Mountain Park. Many work campers also live on the campgrounds. One of the park's most charismatic work campers is John Gombala. A 70-year old retiree and Lilburn resident, Gombala has worked at the park for six years and brings his past experiences as an executive for a major corporation to his job as a work camper. "Even …

Super Bowl Champion Josh Gordy, a Green Bay Packers cornerback, will lead Hemophilia of Georgia's fundraiser, the Trot to Clot Walk/Run on Saturday at Stone Mountain Park. The walk/run had raised $20,825 as of Friday afternoon, exceeding the group's goal, after a walk last weekend at East Cobb Park. Gordy, from Warthen, Ga., has close relatives with a bleeding disorder. Last weekend, he led the East Cobb walk, greeting participants before the event, signing autographs and posing for photographs. The history of the service and the perspective of a longtime park employee - plus some tips if you plan on going.
One of the most meaningful Stone Mountain Park events, the 67th Annual Easter Sunrise Service, will be held this Sunday, April 24, at 7 a.m. I recently heard someone say that this service was on their bucket list. I asked her why she hadn’t been yet, and she answered that it was so early, and she would have to force the kids to get up and get out the door, too. It made me remember my mom getting us up for an Easter Sunrise Service when I was about 7 years old. It was a brisk morning in my Easter dress, and I had to quickly see what the Easter bunny had left me, so I was not a happy camper. But once we got to the service though, even as a kid, I thought what a peaceful time it was to be with my family. I will always remember that Easter. …
