Two suspects in a rash of robberies of Waffle House restaurants in metro Atlanta, including several in Gwinnett County, were arrested Saturday by police in Calera, AL, after apparently robbing another Waffle House there, according to articles in the Gwinnett Daily Post and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The arrests occurred after police responded to a Waffle House robbery at 4:15 a.m. in Calera, located south of Birmingham and just west of I-65, according to the newspaper accounts. One of the two suspects was caught after a short foot pursuit, police said. No injuries were reported. A suspect was arrested; police said he was holding two children and a woman hostage near the scene of the crime.
One man was killed and another man and a woman were critically injured in a shooting at the Colony of Stone Mountain apartment complex in unincorporated Stone Mountain. A man who was holding two children and a woman hostage near the crime scene has been arrested, DeKalb police said. He is charged with murder, aggravated assault and kidnapping. Police officers who were responding to a domestic disturbance call found the three victims at 2:20 Wednesday morning. The victims were taken to a hospital. The dead man is believed to be in his 20s, police said in a statement. He wasn't identified in the release.

A Sunday afternoon fire in unincorporated Stone Mountain heavily damaged a vacant home on the 500 block of Overlook Drive. Gwinnett Fire spokesman Lt. Eric Eberly said firefighters found a double-wide trailer on fire at 3:17 p.m. The mobile home was vacant and no injuries were reported. Firefighters had the fire under control at 4:34 p.m., according to Eberly. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

What a timely review for this reader! I visited Stone Mountain Village last week, since I have not been in years. I stopped in the Wells Cargo Cafe and talked to the owner. She brewed a fresh pot of coffee for me. Since it was early for dinner, I ordered a fried chicken salad to go.
