Stressing over what snacks to make for your kids that are low in sugar and high on nutrition? Here are a few tricks.
Calling all Moms and Room Mothers. Stressing over what snacks to make for your kids that are low in sugar and high on nutrition? Here are a few tricks I learned over the years that help to keep your family happy and healthy. Think Pink. For breakfast, try strawberry-flavored cream cheese on a slice of toast or a half bagel topped with sliced strawberries in the shape of hearts or fans. If you are really creative, you can slice the strawberry standing on its end and notch out the middle section so that it looks like its own little heart shape on toast. Or make a smiley face with the little red grapes cut in half and positioned on top. Instead of a fattening milkshake, how about a yogurt smoothie with cherries or raspberries? Blend one cup…

Happy Valentine's Day, Lilburn.
Scott Mecredy, owner of Music on Main Street, and Store Manager Michael Hurwitz sat down to sing a love song for Valentine's Day. The song, She Can, was written by Mecredy for his wife, Alicia. It came to be his mother's favorite song, Mecredy said, and when she died, the lyrics were printed in the memorial. Stop by to hear Mecredy, Hurwitz and other musicians perform live when Music on Main Street restarts its weekly jam session, in back of the shop, on April 7. In the meantime, Happy Valentine's Day.

Do you love Valentine's Day, or is it just a day hyped by candy and card makers?
One of my Facebook friends had this to say about February 14: "Valentine's Day is overrated." While many people love to give and get gifts and cards and to wine and dine on Cupid's Day, others like to whine that Cupid's stupid. It's a holiday hyped by the industry they say. What's your take?

Each week we feature a business from our hometown of Lilburn. This week, learn more about Country Garden Florist.
Yvette Quigley has always had an interest in flowers. In fact, Quigley helped out with flower arrangements for her friends' weddings for years while living in Michigan, which is where she met her partner Mike Shaw. The pair moved to Lilburn and took over ownership of Country Garden Florist from Rita Pantels last February. Pantels originally opened up the florist shop in 1977. I recently sat down with Yvette and Mike to talk about their business. Patch: What is the best aspect of owning Country Garden Florist? Mike: We were very fortunate in terms of the staff and the customer base that were in place from the many years that Rita was running this place. We have very loyal customers and we do things that are a little bit out of the norm and …

How do the chocolates at the grocery stack up? According to dietitian Gloria Tsang, author of the new book Go UnDiet: 50 Small Actions for Lasting Weight Loss and founder of nutrition network HealthCastle.com, many products you might find in the chocolates section of your grocery store or gift shop have much more sugar and fat than real chocolate. "It's always a good idea to stick to real chocolate rather than candies and bars with chocolate flavoring," Tsang says. "But even when you're buying real chocolate, there are major nutritional differences between types that you may not be aware of."
