Last year around this time, my husband and I signed up our oldest for soccer at the J.M. Tull-Gwinnett YMCA in Lawrenceville. It was 3-year-old soccer even though our little guy was already 4. The season ran for six weeks and the games lasted for 30 minutes. Everett had fun (more so because Dad was the coach), little sister enjoyed playing in the dirt and I thought the whole uniform-and-cleats thing made for some cute pictures. This year, however, we decided to hold off on putting Everett in another organized sport. We don't have a particular reason, other than he's only 5 and not even in elementary school yet. Kids, families connect at Thanksgiving wrestling tournament.
When Jack Smith, a former all-state wrestler in his native Ohio, found out 10 years ago that he was going to be the father of twin boys, he had an immediate, perhaps unusual, reaction. "Two state champions," Smith recalled saying. "And last year, it came true." Smith, coach for the Parkview Youth Wrestling program, was talking about his 10-year-old twins Logan and Gavin, two of the more than 300 kids ages 5 to 14 who participated in Saturday's Parkview Thanksgiving Tournament in Lilburn. Last year, Logan and Gavin won Team Georgia USA Wrestling titles, and both have aspirations of wrestling at Ohio State.
