The restaurant originally opened in Lilburn, but closed its doors in late 2010.
After 10 years in Lilburn, the Blue Rooster Café & Bakery has reopened its doors in downtown Lawrenceville. The restaurant officially reopened March 18. Co-owners and sisters-in-law Kyle and Donna Caves were excited on the big day, as they braved cold, rainy weather to talk to customers. Previously, the restaurant occupied 107 Main Street in Old Town Lilburn, but closed just after Christmas in 2010. The original owners, who included Kyle Caves, were longtime residents of Lilburn, who wanted a place for homestyle cuisine. Locals would flock to the Main Street restaurant to dine on chicken salad, fried chicken or pick up one of their popular box lunches. When it closed, Old Town Lilburn became void of any place to eat. The new space in …
The owners currently are taking name suggestions for the new restaurant.
Construction has started for a new restaurant in Old Town Lilburn, as the owners of a Decatur-area eatery move closer to a spring opening. Sprig Restaurant owners Anthony and Jennifer Tiberia have agreed to locate a new restaurant in the space previously occupied by the Blue Rooster Café & Bakery on Main Street. The owners have said that the biggest draw was the feel of the neighborhood. Construction officially started March 13, and the owners expect renovations to cost about $400,000, Anthony Tiberia said. Construction should be complete within two months, he added. And, the target date for opening is June 1. "So far so good," Tiberia said. "Avoiding any unforeseen issues we should be on schedule." Currently, the owners are looking for …

Lilburn City Council met on Sept. 10 for its regular work session and council meetings of the month. Here is a quick run-down of the major happenings and discussions. 1. Items for Discussion (work session): Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Summary: Norman Nash, chairman of the DDA, updated the mayor and council members regarding the Main Street alignment project. The DDA's reported that the organization owned six properties, including one property that is rented to St. Mary's Independent Living Extension, or S.M.I.L.E., for about $800 a month. Just prior to the meeting, Nash added, a final property went under contract to purchase. Because of the final agreement, there will be no taking of property, or eminent domain, city officials …

The old Blue Rooster Café & Bakery location in Lilburn has been vacant for more than a year and a half. What do you think should go there?
Old Town Lilburn just isn't the same with the closed Blue Rooster Café & Bakery languisihing on Main Street. For a year and a half now, it's sat empty -- a literal shell of what it used to be. Mayor Johnny Crist has said he'd like to see a top-notch restaurant come to the location. It could be a virtual beacon for other changes to come, and make the area a destination, he said. However, there are improvements that would have to be made, he added. Property records show the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) purchased the building for $160,000 in October 2011. That was half the initial $320,000 asking price from the seller, a bank. The DDA had hopes of quickly leasing it to a restaurant operator. There have been interested parties, but, to…

Soul food on one side, a coffee shop on the other is Gordon's vision for the old Blue Rooster building.
Gene Gordon has a dream: opening a restaurant at the old Blue Rooster site on one side of the building, with a Starbucks-style coffee shop and bakery on the other. Or it would be his dream if he could get some shut-eye. "I can't sleep for thinking about it," Gordon said. Gordon now partners with Gateway and delivers chips like those tasty vegetable-flavored ones at Main Street Market, but he's worked in restaurants. He learned to cook from his mother, he said, and he's worked with Robbie Montgomery, the owner of Sweetie Pie's at the Mangrove in St. Louis, Mo. She is Gordon's stepfather's ex-partner and the star of the Oprah Winfrey Network's Welcome to Sweetie Pie's. "I think I'm a step above," Sweetie Pie's, Gordon said after speaking …

Rebecca and Nathan Calhoun would like to make the spot into the go-to place for both food and entertainment.
Lilburn's Downtown Development Authority has another candidate to consider for the Blue Rooster building on Main Street that's been vacant for more than a year: A local couple would like to open a cafe offering healthy sandwiches, soups and salads. The eatery would highlight the history of the building and the railroad in Lilburn, Nathan and Rebecca Calhoun told the DDA Wednesday night, "an old-town railroad theme with decor and music to match," according to Rebecca Calhoun. The couple presented a business plan at the DDA's Wednesday night meeting. At last month's meeting, Candace Hawkins gave a presentation on the Southern/Creole restaurant she would like to open there. A few other people have expressed interest in the building, said Doug…

Downtown Development Authority purchase aimed at getting tenants into the building as soon as possible, officials said.
Lilburn City Council on Monday approved a $40,000 loan to the Downtown Development Authority for the purchase of the Blue Rooster Cafe property, a move aimed at getting new businesses into a hallmark Main Street building in order to shore up others in Old Town Lilburn. The DDA will pay $160,000 for the property, DDA Chairman Norman Nash said at the council's work session. That's half the initial $320,000 asking price from the seller, a bank. Once it has aquired the building, the DDA aims to lease it to a restaurant operator or two as quickly as possible. The building has been vacant and bank-owned since the cafe closed shortly after Christmas last year. People have expressed interest in leasing the space, but no buyers have materialized, …

Lilburn's Downtown Development Authority wants to get tenants into the building as quickly as possible; city council on Monday will consider a recommendation to loan $40,000 to the DDA toward the purchase.
Lilburn's Downtown Development Authority plans to buy the Blue Rooster property on Main Street in order to get tenants in the building as quickly as possible, according to Doug Stacks, planning and economic development director for the city. The Blue Rooster Cafe closed shortly after Christmas, and it's now bank-owned. A lot of people have expressed interest in renting the space, but the bank can't lease it out, Stacks said. "It's been sitting there vacant for a good time, bank-owned," Stacks said. "The immediate plan is to get someone in there." The DDA could "at least get a good tenant in there" until a buyer can be found. City council on Monday will consider a recommendation to loan $40,000 to the DDA to be used toward the purchase, …

The property formerly known as the Blue Rooster is currently available for purchase.
If you haven't noticed, the Old Town Lilburn location that once housed the Blue Rooster Cafe is back on the market. So far, there have been plenty of inquiries, but no firm offers, according to the realtor in charge of its listing. "We've had a lot of people interested in the property," said Sam Hale of the Hale Retail Group, "Many of them have expressed that before The Blue Rooster closed it was very lively. Most of the people that I've spoken with were interested in reviving that same feeling." Since the popular restaurant closed shortly after Christmas, residents of Lilburn have mourned its loss. As a popular gathering space for local events, the Blue Rooster had become a central hub for activity in Old Town. Now after six months, …
