Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools on Tuesday, passing a constitutional amendment empowering a commission to overrule local school districts that reject charter school petitions. With all counties fully reporting, the hotly contested amendment had support of 58.5 percent of voters. See selected county results below. People have criticized the showing of "Seal Team Six," the movie about the killing of Osama bin Laden, saying it is an attempt to help the president in his reelection bid. What do you think?
"Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama bin Laden," a made for TV movie about the killing of Osama bin Laden, was shown Sunday night on the National Georgraphic Channel. Some have said it was an attempt to aid President Barack Obama in his reelection bid. According to a story in Reuters, however, a TV executive rejected the claims. Although ackowledging that the proximity of the election was not lost on them, David Lyle, chief executive of National Georgraphic Channel, told Reuters that it was shown because it was thought to be of interest to viewers. And just who will be surprised?
Nobody expected the last days of the campaign to be impacted by anything but a man made October surprise – and there were many of those predicted. Donald Trump tried one on President Barack Obama last week, and that appears to have fallen flat. Attorney Gloria Allred has been hinting at one for Gov. Mitt Romney in recent days, but nobody appears to be very interested in that either. But Hurricane Sandy, now that was a surprise that nobody was expecting. As everybody hunkers down to withstand what is being described as “the storm of the century,” media outlets such as Bloomberg Business Week have been speculating on just how much of an impact the storm will have on the election and the two campaigns. Donald Trump is offering $5 million to a charity of President Barack Obama's choice if the president will release his passport applications and college records.
After a lot of hype about an announcement he had that would have a significant impact on the election, businessman and one-time potential candidate for president himself, Donald Trump, made his big announcement on Wednesday. It turned out to be not as much of an announcement as it was a challenge. On YouTube, Trump asked the president to release his college and passport applications and records. If he does, Trump pledged to donate $5 million dollars to the charity of Obama's choice. Well, OK then. A different kind of "October surprise," to say the least. With 29 states, including Georgia, already voting, just how much of an influence is the final debate likely to have on the election?
The final debate before the official 2012 Election Day will be tonight, but just how many votes will it really affect? According to a story on NBC News, both campaigns have been working hard on the early vote, something that the Obama campaign did very well on in 2008. With 29 of the 31 states that vote early with the polls already open, many voters have already made up their minds and voted that choice. NBC reports that early voting is already on a par, possibly exceeding, 2008 levels when the Obama campaign was crediting with being able to take advantage of getting early voters to the polls. If you missed the stand up comedy routines of President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney at the Albert E. Smith Annual Dinner on Thursday, you missed something worthwhile. After seeing them go at each other in a not so nice way in Tuesday's debate, it was a refreshing change to see a lighter side of both candidates. The jabs, however, were still there. Lilburn native David Staples is running for the District 5 seat of the Public Service Commission. Patch caught up with this Parkview High alumnus, who's now living on a farm in Cobb County, about why he's taken a fancy to politics. The Public Service Commission doesn't get a lot of attention, usually, but there's still critical things it does in the public's interest -- like keep a watch on energy and telecom businesses.
