Update: 'Good' Voter Turnout in Lilburn City Elections

A total of 1,363 votes were cast in Tuesday's elections, a turnout of about 23 percent.

Updated at 9:30 p.m. A total of 1,363 people voted in Tuesday's Lilburn city elections, a turnout of about 23 percent. Voter turnout in Lilburn city elections has been "good," poll official and city clerk Kathy Maner said earlier in the day. Positions to be filled include mayor and two city council seats, and voters are also deciding whether to allow alcohol to be sold on Sundays. Asked about the deciding factor in making their choice for mayor and city council, voters told Patch they were concerned about things ranging from the cost of a new city hall to taxes and how the mosque expansion issue was handled. "Not being seen as a place that is prejudiced to religions or anything else," was the concern expressed by Roberta Rochman, who …

Q&A With the Council Candidates, Part 4

The six candidates for Lilburn city council answer questions about their short-term vision for the city and on improving community involvement.

This is the last in a series of Q&As with Lilburn city council candidates ahead of Tuesday's elections. There are six candidates for two city council posts -- two for Post 1 and four for Post 2. The answers are presented in alphabetical order and by post. Question: What is your vision for Lilburn in the next five years? Post 1 Candidate Teresa Czyz: My vision for Lilburn came to light as I spoke with people in the city. There are a lot of opportunities to do some unique things in our small town. I see a business community that is vibrant and bustling, with restaurants, shops, offices, industry and corporations. I see a park system that offers a variety of activities and events, which will bring people to Lilburn. I see entertainment venues…

I have visited Victoria, Canada, Key West, Florida, Thomasville, Georgia, Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, Carmel, California and Calloway Gardens, Georgia, among other colorful places. Until something enticing, in the way of colorful landscaping, is added to Main Street and its approaches to lure hummingbirds Lilburn will remain an unattractive route to somewhere else. I cannot conceive …   more ›

Sunday Soapbox: Lilburn Elections and the Mosque Issue

Will the dispute around the Dar-E-Abbas expansion decide who will be Lilburn's next mayor and who will serve on city council?

With only days left until Tuesday's elections, I keep thinking about an article that appeared in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about a month ago that implied the mayoral race may be decided by the Dar-E-Abbas brouhaha. "Many city officials and residents expect the dispute to figure prominently in Lilburn’s municipal elections in November," the article, Mosque dispute divides Lilburn, asserted, and one Lilburnite was quoted as saying Johnny Crist may win because of it. Mayoral candidate Crist was the only city council member to vote against the Dar-E-Abbas rezoning application in the Aug. 16 city council meeting. Mayor Diana Preston, who's running for re-election, and the city council members who voted in favor of the application say …

LauraLee I believe what you ARE comparing here is apples and oranges. I’m talking about people being able to practice the religion of their choice. And that includes Christianity. Operative word is CHOICE. I’m not suggesting you accept another religion to practice… It’s YOUR CHOICE. And you as well as many others need to stop connecting all of one group to the illegal, immoral, un God like …   more ›
