Upcoming Lilburn Events for the Whole Family

There are several activities coming soon that you may not want to miss.

Spring is the time for many events in cities around Gwinnett County, and Lilburn is no different. See the list below for activities and other interesting happenings in the neighborhood. If you do not see your event mentioned, and want to make sure the community knows about it, be sure to add it to our events or announcements pages. Lilburn Relay Rally -- April 26, 2013 This annual fundraising and cancer awareness event takes place this coming Friday, April 26, from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. at the city park. Monies raised supports the American Cancer Society through Gwinnett County Relay for Life, which is held in May. If you would like to get involved, there's still time. UPDATE: Busy Weekend in Lilburn: Easter Bunny, Fun Run and Arts Showcase

The Lilburn Downtown Development Authority is sponsoring the annual Easter egg hunt, which is one of several activities this weekend in Lilburn.

Updated March 22, 5:56 p.m.: The Lilburn Arts Alliance event location has changed to city hall, 76 Main Street. -------------- There are a number of activities going on in the area of Old Town Lilburn this weekend. Easter Egg Hunt The Easter bunny hops into Lilburn City Park this weekend, where children will hunt for colorful eggs scattered about the grounds. Call for Georgia Artists to Design Roundabouts, March Mixer on Tap

The Lilburn Arts Alliance recently held an open public meeting, and at it, members discussed a likely contest to design the city's new roundabout art.

The Lilburn Arts Alliance announced that a contest is brewing to design the city's roundabouts near the new City Hall building. According to an email from alliance leader Sonny Franks, the group "revealed an exciting" opportunity for artists to design proposals for the public art to be constructed with the new roundabouts along the realigned Main Street. No details are available just yet, but Franks said the contest would be limited to Georgia artists. (See attached layouts of the road, as well as a rendering of the new city hall building.) City Council Meeting Notes, Feb. 11: Community Garden, Website Overhaul and More

The city of Lilburn held its monthly meeting on Feb. 11 at City Hall.

The Lilburn City Council met on Monday, Feb. 11, for its monthly work session and regular meeting. Here is a quick run-down of what the major happenings were. 1. Website Redevelopment Contract Lilburn City Council passed authorized a contract with Kansas-based CivicPlus. The vote was 3-1, with Thomas Wight opposed. The contract is for a total not to exceed $32,262. This includes $24,296 for redesigning the website, and $3,983 for website hosting. The city will pay approximately $10,754 in equal payments over three years.  In addition to the above work, CivicPlus also has agreed to redesign the website a second time at the end of their three-year contract. There were 12 companies who submitted proposals for redesign of the city's website. …

Art Alliance Launches Facebook Site, Charter Membership Meeting Jan. 23

The Lilburn Art Alliance will meet on Jan. 23 for its charter membership meeting. All are invited.

Following a successful premiere art exhibition, the Lilburn Art Alliance is gearing up for the rest of the year. The group has set up a Facebook page, which interested artists and residents can stay apprised of happenings within the arts community. Click here to reach the Lilburn Art Alliance Facebook page. In addition, the first charter membership of the art alliance will be 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 107 Main Street (formerly Blue Rooster Cafe). The group is expected to present future ideas, as well as take input from attendees. In Pictures: Art Exhibition Draws Crowd

The Lilburn Art Alliance welcomes more guests than expected to its first art exhibition on Jan. 12.

The Lilburn Art Alliance's first public exhibition held Jan. 12 is being touted as a great, positive achievement for the city. Just 50-100 people were expected at the event, which was held inside the old Blue Rooster Cafe and catered by Decatur's Sprig restaurant. However, according to organizers, at least double that flocked in to enjoy art, entertainment, food and conversation.  Officials are hoping the art exhibition is one of many more monthly activities held by the Lilburn Art Alliance. Mayor Johnny Crist called the event a "smashing success." Sonny Franks, a member of the newly formed Lilburn Art Alliance and an organizer of the Saturday event, said he was "so stoked" at the turnout and enthusiasm. "As soon as we opened the doors …

Art Alliance to Host Public Showcase

The Lilburn Art Alliance will hold an art exhibition Jan. 12, and the public is invited. Anyone interested in joining the alliance may attend the event, as well.

The Lilburn Art Alliance will host its first exhibition on Saturday, Jan. 12, and the public is invited, according to a press release from city officials. The event will feature local artists, including Susan Boudreaux, Diana Dice, Teri Enfield, Alan Harp, Gwendolyn McDonald, David Raderstorf, and Peggy Sullens. The art showcase takes place 1-6 p.m. at 107 Main Street in Old Town. Sprig restaurant, located in Decatur, is providing complimentary appetizers and wine. Music on Main Street will provide entertainment. In addition to enjoying the local art, the Lilburn Art Alliance hopes interested residents will join efforts to promote public art projects throughout the city. Alliance Anchors City Art Renaissance

The Lilburn Art Alliance is just getting started, but already it has big plans for the city.

Twenty years ago, Sonny Franks was a little less gray-haired, but no less enthusiastic about bringing art to Lilburn residents. At the time, Franks first started thinking that something needed to be done about the wall over on the Cofer Electric building, located at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Main Street in Old Town. His very first design -- an "old-timey," fictional company, the Lilburn Locomotive Works. He even approached city council then about getting it done. "I didn't have any gray hair back when I first did that," Franks joked, "and, now I told them, 'We got to finally get started while I can still climb a ladder.'"
