Family of Four Displaced by Fire on Hampton Trail

No injuries were reported in a fire that displaced two adults and two teenagers.

A three-engine fire has displaced a Lilburn family of four, two adults and two teenagers, Wednesday night. The family wasn't home when the fire started and came home as neighbors were calling 911. Gwinnett County firefighters arrived to find the rear of the two-storey house engulfed in flames, said Capt. Tommy Rutledge, spokesman for the fire department, in an email. The fire caused "extensive damage" to the attic and porch, and part of the deck collapsed, Rutledge said. The fire appears to have started beneath the screened porch, and the cause is under investigation. "Firefighters worked aggressively to control the blaze using multiple hoselines," Rutledge said, and had the fire under control within 35 minutes after arriving on the scene.

Squirrel Causes Power Outage for 5,000 Lilburn Residents

Berkmar High School was evacuated briefly as a precautionary measure.

A squirrel was the cause of power failure for about 5,000 Lilburn area residents Thursday morning. The rodent got into Georgia Power's substation, causing an outage for about an hour, a spokeswoman for the utility said. Berkmar High School was evacuated as a precautionary measure after school staff reported a faint smell of smoke from the ninth grade wing after the power was off, Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Tommy Rutledge said. "Firefighters checked the building and found no signs of heat, smoke or fire," Rutledge said in an email. "The power came back on as firefighters were there and they conducted a second check and still found nothing." It's not clear whether the outage and the smoke smell were related, Rutledge said. Berkmar …

Fire Officials Urge Caution When Burning Leaves, Other Debris

County ordinance regulates how and when outdoor burning may take place.

Now that the outdoor burn ban has ended, fire officials are reminding citizens to follow regulations and exercise caution when burning leaves, branches or other debris. The outdoor burn ban for metro Atlanta ended on Sept. 30. However, certain days may still be designated no burn days due to weather and atmospheric conditions. Before doing any outdoor burning, check the Gwinnett Fire Community Risk Reduction (CRR)/Fire Marshal’s website or call the Burn Information Line at (678) 518-4979.  Information is updated daily by 9 a.m.       According to Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Service public information officer Capt. Tommy Rutledge, firefighters first take an educational approach when responding to burn violation complaints.          “…

Early Morning Fire in Lilburn Causes Heavy Damage

No one is hurt in blaze on Marydale Drive.

An early morning fire that may have started in the fireplace caused heavy damage to a Lilburn home Tuesday. Firefighters found a fully involved fire at a split-level home in the 1400 block of Marydale Drive when they arrived sometime after 2 a.m., according to Gwinnett Fire Public Information Officer Tommy Rutledge. The four adults in the house smelled the smoke and escaped without injury, Rutledge said. The exact cause has not been determined, but there reportedly had been a fire burning in the fireplace for warmth.  “The fire may have originated from the fireplace,” Rutledge wrote in his incident report. Rutledge reported that crews were unable to enter the house because of the intensity of the fire. Crews also battled bitterly cold …
